This 14-day route links Calgary, the Badlands, the Rocky Mountain parks, and the southern foothills. With stays in cozy lodges, guided activities, and thoughtful pacing, the trip offers a grounded and immersive introduction to Alberta’s natural and cultural richness.

Settle into Calgary and take your first walk through the city. Historic sandstone buildings stand alongside modern towers, while neighbourhoods such as Kensington and the Beltline offer cafés, small shops, and public art.

An evening stroll along the Bow River gives a first glimpse of the landscapes that will define the days ahead.

Day 2 – Explore the Land Before Time

Head east into the Canadian Badlands, where coulees, hoodoos, and exposed sediment layers reveal millions of years of geologic history.

This is one of the world’s richest paleontology regions, a place where erosion continues to unearth traces of ancient life. Explore the town of Drumheller and take in the Royal Tyrrell Museum. The Willow Creek Hoodoos site, just 16 km east of Drumheller on Highway 10, offers some of the most picturesque hoodoo vistas in the area.

From here, turn west toward the Rockies, watching the plains rise into foothills as the mountains begin to dominate the skyline. Arrive in Banff, your base in Canada’s first national park.

Day 3: Guided Lake Louise & Moraine Lake

Spend the day exploring two of the Rockies’ most iconic valleys. With a private guide navigating timed access and sharing deep knowledge of glaciation, silt, and alpine ecosystems, the experience moves beyond simple sightseeing.

Lake Louise and Moraine Lake are heavily visited in summer, but early starts and expert planning help you enjoy these landscapes with more ease and understanding.

Day 4 – A Free Day in Banff

Today is your day to explore the townsite of Banff.

Wander short trails, bike the river path, visit local museums, or soak in the hot springs. Banff’s compact townsite offers easy access to viewpoints, cafés, and modern dining, allowing you to experience both the amenities and the surrounding mountains at your own pace.

Day 5 – Visit Yoho National Park

Cross the Continental Divide into Yoho National Park, where glacial forces have carved Emerald Lake’s vivid shoreline and sent water cascading down the spectacular Takakkaw Falls.

After time to explore, continue west to Moberly Lodge near Golden, British Columbia. Set amid forest and wide valley views, the lodge offers a calmer evening after Banff’s busy centre.

Day 6 – Golden Activity Day

Golden offers room to breathe — broad valleys, high ridgelines, and accessible adventure for all comfort levels.

Raft the Kicking Horse River, ride the gondola to alpine viewpoints, paddleboard on quiet water, or opt for short local hikes. Whether you seek gentle hours or active exploration, the day adapts easily to your pace.

Begin with a short morning walk to Wapta Falls before continuing onto the Icefields Parkway, often cited as one of the most beautiful mountain roads in the world.

Stop at Bow Lake, Peyto Lake, and Mistaya Canyon to witness glacial-fed colour, narrow slot canyons, and shifting alpine terrain.

Arrive at Aurum Lodge, a quiet, low-impact property perched above Abraham Lake.

Day 8 – Icefield Parkway & Athabasca Glacier

Join trained guides for an on-foot Icewalk on the Athabasca Glacier, learning how meltwater channels, crevasses, and seasonal change shape this dynamic icefield.

The afternoon is open for additional exploration — guided hiking, horseback riding, heli-sightseeing, river floats, or simply time on a viewpoint trail — allowing you to tailor your time in this stretch of the Rockies.

Day 9 – Aurum To Mount Engadine Lodge

Kananaskis offers wide meadows, dense forest, and rugged ridgelines — a region known for steady wildlife viewing and quieter trails.

Spend the day as you choose: e-bike rental, paddleboarding, gentle walks, or a guided hike into high cirques. Or relax in the Kananaskis Nordic Spa. This flexible day encourages slow travel and gives you space to move according to interest and energy.

Day 11 – Thanksgiving Ranch via the Cowboy Trail

Explore lakeshore paths, Red Rock Canyon, or the Bison Paddock, where bison roam a protected grassland shaped by wind, weather, and open prairie light.

The combination of sweeping views and intimate wildlife encounters makes Waterton a fitting finale to the journey.

Day 14 – Return to Calgary

Depart the ranch and travel north through open rangeland and foothills, the mountains gradually receding in your rearview.

Arrive in Calgary for your onward flight, carrying with you a clearer sense of Alberta’s ecological range — from eroded Badlands to glacier valleys and the quiet rhythm of ranch country.
